Description
The acquisition of skills in the fields of palaeontology and sedimentology requires on-site practical analyses. The recognition of the main organisms, communities and their sedimentary context allows the reconstruction of the evolution of the sedimentary archives and their depositional environments. It also allows to understand the modalities of development of organisms in their environment. The field tools, through cross-section surveys, characterization of the biotic content, determination of sedimentary structures and geometries, will make it possible to build stratigraphic correlations (using tools such as sequence stratigraphy, ichnology and biostratigraphy) and to discuss the evolution of ecological communities over time (palaeoecology).
Program :
TD intégré :
Fieldtrip (5/6 days) in France, Spain or Morocco.
Field Sedimentological and palaeontological analyses
Objectifs
Using the fundamental concepts in sedimentology and palaeontology to reconstruct palaeoenvironments and ecosystems.
Analyzing, interpreting and reporting scientific data in English (or/and French).
Applying the concepts of sedimentology (geometry, facies, (bio)sedimentary structures) and palaeontology (recognition of fossils and their activities), using stratigraphic (sequence and biostratigraphy) and palaeontological (palaeoecology, ichnology) tools in order to reconstruct the depositional environments and the evolution of fossil assemblages in their environmental context.
